Discussion:
[YamahaDX] Yamaha DX7 MKI Voltage?

It seems that after a battery change that it hovers around 4.5 / 4.6 volts. I have read that the range is anywhere between 2.2 and 5 volts. Is this true? I have checked the battery and it shows 3.X volts as it states.

Well, I have loaded my internal patches, shut the beastie off and on several times and they are still there. Everything else seems to work quite fine.

Could this have to do with some unknown mod in the past? A different country version? A quirk?

-OR- am I in for a dastardly surprise very soon down the road? Is this my karma for hanging onto old gear?

As always, any help would be appreciated.

The DX7 voltage reading system is notoriously inaccurate. I have always seen around 4.5V with a good battery installed. It may be useful to see when a battery is going down, but don’t expect it to show you the true voltage.

All backup batteries should read pretty much spot on. WHEN THE POWER IS OFF. If it's a 3.0 V CR-type coin battery, it should read 3.0 VDC.When the power is on. the voltage measured at the battery (+) will typically be around 5.0V, as that is the "nominal or typical" DC voltage powering all the digital hardware/ chips. The battery substitutes for the RAM power only. Nowhere else. Always better to measure the backup power at the RAM power pin itself. If the battery reads 2.9 VDC, when powered off, the battery is most likely pooched and should be replaced. Batteries showing even slightly less than rated voltage are generally going south. The power supply (when powered up) reading less than 5.0 VDC is indicating the voltage is low and that part of the power supply is suffering from aging capacitors or some other fault. Electrolytic capacitors have the highest statistical failure rate of ANY component, even when new. This is normal given the age of these things now and are easily replaced. Warning: they are polarized and must only go in the same way, with the NEG mark pointing in the correct direction. One physical indication  that caps are dying, is that they often bulge out at the top rather than being flat, like their neighbors.

Tracy. I have one the came from Japan given by Yamaha directly and purportedly used by a famous rock group. Anyway my battery voltage reads 4.5 volts and it works fine. Maybe others can provide an explanation. I believe proper voltage is 3.8 to 2.3 I have a lamp cord for a power cord with Yamaha on it. Different than my other dx7.

The "lamp" cord on the Japanese-sourced DX7 is because Japan (and maybe one other country worldwide) has unique electrical power of 100VAC/ 50 Hz and not 120VAC/ 60Hz as in North America. No U-ground, required there. Different electrical standards and connectors.

Thank you for the encouragement. The synth seems to work fine, except that I can't get it to to do diagnostic tests 9 - 11. 1 - 8 work well and I passed all of them except for the notorious non-existent disk test.

Any ideas how I can go further to test 9 - 11? When I press +1 it goes back to "88 Synthesizer" as if it were starting up - without resetting.

Thanks for your time.

This is definitely good to know. I thought I was doing something wrong. Apparently - not!

Thanks for your time...

Tracy. I have one the came from Japan given by
Yamaha directly and purportedly used by a famous rock group.
Anyway my battery voltage reads 4.5 volts and it works fine.
Maybe others can provide an explanation. I believe proper
voltage is 3.8 to 2.3   I have a lamp cord for a power cord
with Yamaha on it. Different than my other dx7.

That's one thing that bothered me, not being a technician but a PC repair guy trying to fix his old senile synths. Ooops - no offense anyone.

There's 4 versions of the DX7 MKI and that would give anyone the willies...

Tracy

The "lamp" cord on the
Japanese-sourced DX7 is because Japan (and maybe one other
country worldwide) has unique electrical power of 100VAC/ 50
Hz and not 120VAC/ 60Hz as in North America. No U-ground,
required there. Different electrical standards
and connectors.

Very interesting. I guess you hit all of the hot spots on that one. Thanks.

Apparently, it is within working parameters then. Unless, of course, something acts up and then poof - I DO have a problem.

Yeah, I checked the battery with a Fluke 87V and it read 3.1 Volts outside the synth. I put in one of those velcro / case / wire mods so I wouldn't have to dig around later. I have had success with my Korg DDD-5 (don't laugh) and it works fine with the same method.

I do know about the capacitors but also have been told that not all bad ones have exploded ends. But, I have seen exploded caps before and know what to look for.

OK... I'm sealing up the DX7 and not touching that sucker again, except as to play it.

Thanks again for the detailed description. Going in the archives.

Tracy

All backup batteries should read pretty
much spot on. WHEN THE POWER IS OFF. If it's a 3.0 V
CR-type coin battery, it should read 3.0 VDC.When
the power is on. the voltage measured at the battery (+)
will typically be around 5.0V, as that is the "nominal
or typical" DC voltage powering all the digital
hardware/ chips. The battery substitutes for the RAM power
only. Nowhere else. Always better to measure the backup
power at the RAM power pin itself. If the battery reads 2.9
VDC, when powered off, the battery is most likely pooched
and should be replaced. Batteries showing even slightly less
than rated voltage are generally going
south. The power supply (when powered up)
reading less than 5.0 VDC is indicating the voltage is low
and that part of the power supply is suffering from aging
capacitors or some other fault. Electrolytic capacitors have
the highest statistical failure rate of ANY component, even
when new. This is normal given the age of these things now
and are easily replaced. Warning: they are polarized and
must only go in the same way, with the NEG mark pointing in
the correct direction. One physical indication  that caps
are dying, is that they often bulge out at the top rather
than being flat, like their neighbors.

Thank you for the encouragement.  The synth seems
to work fine, except that I can't get it to to do
diagnostic tests 9 - 11.  1 - 8 work well and I passed all
of them except for the notorious non-existent disk test.
Any ideas how I can go further to test 9 - 11?  When I press
+1 it goes back to "88 Synthesizer" as if it were
starting up - without resetting.
Thanks for your time.

The DX7 voltage reading system is notoriously
  inaccurate. I have always
seen around 4.5V with a good battery installed. It may
be
  useful to see when a
battery is going down, but don’t expect it to show you
the
  true voltage.

  Subject: [YamahaDX] Yamaha DX7 MKI
  Voltage?

It seems that after a battery change that it hovers
  around 4.5 / 4.6
volts.   I have read that the range is anywhere
between
  2.2 and 5
volts.  Is this true?  I have checked the battery and
it
  shows 3.X
  volts as it states.

  Well, I
have loaded my internal patches, shut the
beastie off and on several times and they are still
there.
  Everything else
  seems to work quite fine.

Could this have to do with some unknown mod in
the past?  A different country version?  A quirk?

  -OR-
am I in for a dastardly surprise very soon down the
road?
  Is this my karma
  for hanging onto old gear?

As always, any help would be appreciated.

Not all Operating System version of the DX7 (the EPROM) offer the same tests. More-or-less, as time advanced they seem to have removed tests in order to cram more OS features or corrections in. Your version probably doesn't have the last few tests. I wouldn't fret about it too much though as self-tests aren't entirely reliable/useful anyway since they rely on the "self" to operate.

Yamaha states in the Owner's Manual that the SRAM will retain content down to a battery voltage of about 2.2v. That seems about right looking at the chip data sheets and circuit.

"Press the [BATTERY CHECK] button and examine the voltage. If it is below 2.2 volts, the battery must be replaced; if it is over 3.6 volts, something may be wrong with the DX7."

As others have mentioned, I have seen where the voltage is higher than 3.6 and it might be that the diode is toast, but I've not had a change to investigate this. The A/D samples other signals too, so maybe it's reporting something from the data slider or other analog input, not sure.

This would appear so. Others have reported high voltage and ill effects. I'll keep an eye on it if it burps somewhere... I looked at the diode and it didn't look burnt, toast, or have lost solder... Dunno... Don't want to change it out and cause other problems... Unless I need to. Thanks!
