[YamahaDX] What patch is this? (Genesis)

There is a particular DX7 sound used all over the Invisible Touch album. You can hear it in Domino Part 2, Land of Confusion, Anything She Does, and Invisible Touch.

It kind of sounds like WireStrung, from VRC-128 Special Selection (Gary Leuenberger), but I don't think that's what it is.

I got a hold of Rittor Music Voice Data 128 Vol.1, because it has a few Genesis patches, but none of them really sound right at all either.

I know there is some chorus and reverb on the record, so whatever patch it is won't sound exactly like the album, but hopefully I can at least find the right patch.

Does anyone know what this illusive patch is? Or rather the soundbank it would be found in? From what I've read, Tony Banks never programmed any of his own patches, they were all either factory or from 3rd party cartridges.

Any info would be greatly appreciated! :)

Could you upload a couple of seconds of each of the songs so that I can hear the sound please

I've attached a string of snippets from the Invisible Touch album where this patch stands out. In the case of Land of Confusion, the patch is really used throughout the entire song. But I'm not referring to the DX7 bass stabs that mimic the bass drum pattern on the drum machine, I'm referring to the sound that mimics the guitar part in the beginning, and is used throughout the song, that sort of metallic sound.

The sound has somewhat of a slapback on it, and I think it's part of the patch and not an effect, because some of the patches I have tried out have a similar quality when you release your hand off of the keys.

Ummm, I can't see my file here or in the Files section. Am I doing something wrong? Or does it take a few minutes before it shows up or something?

Alrighty, here is the file: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/YamahaDX/files/DX7%20Genesis.mp3 https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/YamahaDX/files/DX7%20Genesis.mp3

On the Bobby Blues site, I read that Scott Verret (Synthware/Waterfall440) apparently worked with Genesis at some point. Maybe he created the sound for Genesis, or maybe it's available on one of the 4 Synthware cartridges. Unfortunately, I can't find the Synthware soundpacks anywhere, so I can't see for myself.

Genesis didn't use a DX for that album. At the time, as per an article in Keyboard Magazine, he was using an Emulator II, An old ARP Quadra, (Sometimes called a Quartet) A Prophet 10, and his Synclavier II. If it was FM then it was the Synclavier. So chances are you're not going to find an exact duplicate of this on A DX bank somewhere.

The Quartet was also distributed by the Prophet company under the name Prelude. I think it was the Quadra that Tony Banks used.

Yes, Tony used the Arp Quadra on ABACAB.

Yep, owned and gigged with a Quartet.  Couldn't afford a Quadra at the
time! :-(

And you are correct about Tony Banks and the Quadra.

At 7:43, Tony plays the exact sound by itself, demonstrating "Domino."

As Nicole already mentioned, this is assumingly not a DX.
But my impression is, that the most important aspect has nothing to do
with FM-synthesis or not. I think, that there is a multi tap flanger on
the sound or that it is a unison sound with a slight detune.
You may check out
http://www.florian-anwander.de/roland_jp6/JP6_linear_FM.mp3 the sound
starting with 2:55.  This is a JP6 using FM and it's keyboard algorithm
is set to 6.voice unison.

I've been informed that the patch is called "Stratocord." I tried it for myself and it has got to be it.

Tony Banks can be seen playing that sound on a DX7 in videos of the Invisible Touch tour, for Domino and Land of Confusion.
For later tours, he played that sound with a TX7 via MIDI.

Back to the part about playing it on a DX7 for 1987 live shows, I highly doubt he was using the DX7 to control something else via MIDI... But you can clearly see that the DX7 is in fact what he is playing during those parts, so it's safe to say the DX7 is generating that sound.

Stratocord sounds spot on, especially with some chorus and reverb. After all, Tony ran it through a REV7.

I understand it's not necessarily a sound you can only get on a DX7, and you could easily get a similar sound from another synth, but since it IS a DX7, I'm trying to get it on my DX7.

But like I said, "stratocord" :) Works for me...

Hi all,

"Stratocord" is patch n°26 from soundbank volume 3 distributed by Data Store (Germany) and programmed by Hubertus Maass:

http://www.hubertus-maass.de/dom.php/sounddesign-hardware http://www.hubertus-maass.de/dom.php/sounddesign-hardware

So, as you can see, you can possibly find it into Metra Sound or C-Lab cartridges (but with a different name...)

Sincerely,
MK

I have Stratocord handy if anyone needs it.
I found it the other day in one of the huge unsorted folders from DexedCart_1.0, someone also emailed me a sysex file recently, containing that patch.
