[YamahaDX] S/H synth patch from dx27/100/etc. HELP!!!

I'm looking for a sysex file of the Yamaha dx27/dx100/dx11/etc preset called "s/h synth".

It sounds like this:

I have downloaded various online "original preset banks" for the dx100/27/etc and found one patch called s_h synth BUT it is NOT the same patch (at least when played with FM8. The original is harsh - kind of like the preset "heavysynth"- but the one in the banks floating around is just a soft sine wave bank. It might be because it's a slightly different name "s_h synth" instead of "s/h synth". I know the dx27/100 have the EXACT patch I'm looking for so a factory reset and patch dump from one of those would do the trick (I hope).

I just bought a tx81z specially so I could play this patch and much to my chagrin it doesn't HAVE that preset.

Can someone please export an original favorite preset patch bank (or even just the "s/h synth" patch) from their dx100/27/whatever in sysex and post or send me a link . Hell, feel free to email me direct (legionhwp at g-mail) . I'd be happy to send you hundreds of other 4op or dx200 patches in trade ;)

Any/all help appreciated. I know it seems silly to buy a legacy instrument to do one sound but, well, it's a pretty unique and cool sound and I boldly used it on my 1992 album and want to play that track live.

Thanks!!!

Let that be a warning to you.

If you have a sound you really like, don't unload the instrument you
made it on. Or at least make sure you understand the programming behind
the original patch.

I feel your pain, but the situation does have a certain amusement value. (-8

Slight language confusion. In my original response "unloading" meant
"selling", "getting rid of." If you like the sound that much, keep the
machine.

There is a story (which may be true) about a musician who when he found
a sound he liked on a Minimoog, he would glue the pots in place and buy
another Minimoog.
The S/H synth is a factory patch in the D100/21/27 ROM banks. No
unloading possible. My advice: make sysex dumps before you sell a
synth, or before it dies.

FWIW that sound is easily achievable on any analog synth that can apply
Sample&Hold (random) value to the filter cutoff. I'm not sure how the
term S&H became the defacto term for this, but there you have it.

The circuit takes a sample of a random value, then holds it for a specific duration so it can have enough time to create a sound. Otherwise it'd sound like bird chirps, which are sweeps of sounds across a range.

Hi,

Try this one. It should be the "S/H Synth" from the DX100.
I can send yoy the complete set of 8 x 24 DX100 factory presets as sysex
if you need them.

...

and here I have attached the same patch, converted to DX7 format using
DXconvert. Maybe DXconvert does the conversion better than FM8. Maybe FM8
can read DX7 patches better than DX100 patches, I don't know. Just try.

THANK YOU!!! This is exactly what I needed. For some reason the sysex dumps of 100/21/etc don't load this patch into FM8. Having it converted to DX7 format first did the trick.

I'll be getting my TX81z in about a week so I'll try the banks I have in that (I always take hardware out for shows anyway so it'll be good to have that too).

Thanks for the other replies as well. I suppose I should have been more specific; I'm quite familiar with analog synths and sample and hold but I was looking for this exact 4op patch (no filter, rusty lofi sound, etc). All the other S/H stuff I use from the SH101 to the modulars are great but they are not *this* sound.

For anyone curious the track "The Burrow" on my 1994 album is just this patch with a few minor tweaks played live on the DX27. https://davidtalento.bandcamp.com/album/exile-1994 https://davidtalento.bandcamp.com/album/exile-1994

The DX27 was the first synth I ever bought around 1992. I've probably had over 100 synths and drum machines (not kidding) since. I eventually sold it for a DX100 , then I sold that a few years ago when I started to use the DX200 more. Still , nothing like the actual crappy (and by that I mean great) old 4op yammies. Glad to find this group and super thanks for all the help!!
